The Internet changed the way information is accessed. Research that used to take several days can now be surpassed in several hours. One area that has been markedly improved is directory services. In prior times, the only ways to look someone up was to look in the phone book, or call 411. Now phone number searches can be performed for free with a few clicks on the Internet. What is even better is that a task that was previously very hard or impossible to perform, reverse directory, can also be done quickly on the Internet.

If you do not know, a reverse phone book has listings by number instead of by name. So if you had a phone number but did not know who it belonged to, you could look it up in reverse phone book. This would obviously be helpful for missed calls, or for situations where the name associated with the phone number was somehow lost or forgotten. Reverse phone books were not commonly found or accessed in the days before the Internet, so most people had never even used one.

Computers are so good at accessing and deciphering large amounts of information, that putting phone directories on the internet was a no-brainer. Now instead of having to find, and then methodically flip through literally thousands of pages, you can just type a name and city into a search engine or into a special white pages site, and the phone number is immediately displayed. It clearly is much quicker and easier than its paper counterpart, and you can search for numbers for anywhere in the world instead of just in your local area. Read more
